What a great time of year to be a Film Buff! The Oscar nominations came out this week, and SFS is pleased say that we shared each of the films nominated for Best Picture with the Sarasota Films Buffs at one of our two theaters this year.

Legendary Composer David Amram Comes to Burns Court

Join us at 2:00 P.M. this Sunday, January 22nd at Burns Court Cinemas for a special screening of the 1962 classic, The Manchurian Candidate followed by a Q&A with the film’s famous composer, David Amram. Mr. Amram will discuss his work on the film’s score (considered by Frank Sinatra to be the “greatest musical score of all time.”) and his wonderful experiences in both the film and music industry.Over the past 60 years, David Amram has performed and recorded with an array of international artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Bob Dylan, Charles Mingus, Nina Simone, Lionel Hampton, Patti Smith, Stan Getz, Willie Nelson, Betty Carter, Odetta, Tito Puente, Pete Seeger, Johnny Depp, and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. He’s also jammed with people like Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk, while collaborating with such icons as Jack Kerouac, Elia Kazan and Arthur Miller.

The event is a joint effort between SFS and the upcoming PBS series Diamonds Along The Highway (for which Amram has also composed the music), an original show that highlights Florida’s famously interesting people, places, and history. The series premieres on WEDU at 9:30 on Thursday, January 26th, 2012.

Sarasota Film Society Has Cancelled the 2012 Black and Red Gala

For the past five years, the purpose of these Galas has been to raise money for charitable organizations, such as this year’s benefactor, JDRF. Without enough community support, this year’s event risked becoming a financial loss, which would have been the complete opposite of our intent. We would like to thank all of you who wished to support us and JDRF at this year’s Gala, and to contact us immediately for a full refund of your tickets.
