Sound Improvements Coming to Burns Court!

As part of our continuing efforts to improve both our audio and visual presentation, SFS has recently made some substantial improvements at both of its theaters. Late last year, we announced the installation of all new, state-of-the-art NEC Digital Projectors (35mm has become nearly obsolete in today’s marketplace). At the same time, we added Dolby Surround Sound to enhance your listening experience.

Presently, at Burns Court Cinemas, we are in the process of completing the addition of wall board between auditoriums in an effort to reduce ambient sound permeating through the walls. Thank you for your patience during this renovation. We have tried to keep the dirt and dust at a minimum. Next week we will have more information regarding the Hearing Loop System currently being installed at Burns Court. We are very excited about these recent improvements, as I sincerely hope you are. Once again, remember that all these wonderful upgrades could not have been accomplished without your continued support.

SFS and Matson Films Presents: Music From the Big House

Sarasota Film Society invites you to join us for an evening of music and film as we screen Music From the Big House, a documentary following the blues back to Angola Prison, a maximum security prison in Louisiana where music was one of the few outlets for prisoners’ remorse and forgiveness. Joining us for this special evening is Rita Chiarelli, widely known as Canada’s “Queen of the Blues” to provide attendees with a special Q&A reception and concert following the films. Complimentary beer, wine, and soft drinks will be provided.

This one-time event will be held at Lakewood Ranch Cinemas on Saturday, July 21st at 6:00 P.M., with the screening to begin at 7:00 P.M. and the reception and concert to directly follow. Tickets are $25 in advance, and $30 at the door, and can be purchased here on filmsociety.org, or at the box office of Burns Court or Lakewood Ranch Cinemas.

Join Our Filmmaker’s Summer Camp This July!

SFS is pleased to announce our first annual Filmmaker’s Summer Camp, an educational six-week program designed for middle-school-aged children. Your kids will learn everything that goes into the process of filmmaking, from pre-production to exhibition, and even have the chance to make a short film for themselves! Sessions begin Tuesday, July 10th and students will meet each Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. with a lunch break in between.

Classes will be hosted by local filmmaker Gus Molassis, featuring guest speakers, film activities, and a selection of film excerpts for budding filmmakers to study. At the end of the program, each attending student will have a film of his or her own, and will get the chance to walk down the red carpet for a big screen premiere! Class-size is limited, so secure your child’s place by enrolling today by filling out an application located in the Lakewood Ranch or Burns Court Cinema lobby.
